Academy Award Winner to Keynote at Global Forum

Today, Not For Sale announced that Academy Award-winning actress Mira Sorvino will be a keynote speaker at the 2011 Global Forum on Human Trafficking.

The acclaimed actress, who is also a UN Goodwill Ambassador, has officially confirmed she will take the stage at the eagerly anticipated two-day event, which will take place at Juniper Network networks in Sunnyvale, California, on October 21st and 22nd.

Ms. Sorvino will be leading a special session titled Lifting the Veil on October 21st, which will focus on the importance of making the issue of human trafficking more visible, specifically in relation to domestic trafficking.

In 2009, Ms Sorvino was appointed to her current position as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime after supporting their efforts for many years. She was honored by ‘Save the Children’ for her humanitarian work and presented with the ‘Global Advocate of the Year’ award by the UN last year.

Mark Wexler, co-founder of Not For Sale, said, “We are delighted to confirm Mira Sorvino will be taking part in the 2011 Global Forum on Human Trafficking. Mira has been instrumental in highlighting this issue globally and breaking down barriers to bring an end to modern-day slavery. The definition of a ‘smart activist,’ she is a wonderful addition to our list of 50 speakers and her session is not to be missed.”

In addition to her human rights work, the actress continues to impress onscreen with her eclectic film roles, and she recently wrapped production on Christopher Bessette’s Trade of Innocents. The film, which also stars Dermot Mulroney, is about a couple who set out to rescue girls sold into the sex slave trade in Cambodia while grieving their daughter’s death. Global Forum attendees will be treated to an exclusive sneak peak of the brand new trailer for this movie, which will be released in 2012.

Featuring more than 50 global leaders, the Global Forum will discuss and explore new models and tangible solutions to the problems that cause modern-day slavery worldwide.
