Not For Sale supports Kru Nam, a thriving artist and modern-day abolitionist who has rescued and prevented over 110 children from slavery in the sex industry. She and her organization, VCDF, runs a Children’s Home providing education, health services, shelter, food and vocational skills to stateless children.
Current Projects
- Classroom/Dormitory: Many of Kru Nam’s children attend boarding schools, but on breaks they return to the Children’s Home sleeping wherever they find space. For those children not yet accepted into Thai schools, Kru Nam operates a home learning program, but with very little resources. Not For Sale is building Kru Nam an additional classroom and dormitory
- Health Care Cooperative: Not For Sale has provided 1.9 million dollars worth of medical supplies to the local government run hospital who has agreed to serve not only the 110 children under Kru Nam’s care, but all stateless people in the region free of charge.
- Free2Play Court: The recently completed basketball and takraw court has initiated a sports therapy program at the Children’s Home offering rehabilitation through play.
Past Projects
- Building a Village: Since 2007 Not For Sale has supported the work of Kru Nam by building two dormitories, a medical clinic, safehouse, and providing seed funding for sustainable vocational training.
Background: The Issue
In Thailand, stateless ethnic minorities and foreigners are not eligible to receive government provided education, health services, or employment. These marginalized populations face a variety of other serious problems like becoming involved in the trafficking of drugs, illicit goods and people. They lack the ability to protect their young children who often die from preventable diseases and have no access to family planning methods or information regarding how to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and STIs. Parents often sell their children for sexual exploitation out of desperation to survive. Not For Sale in Thailand seeks to address the needs of stateless people, prevent modern-day slavery and protect trafficking survivors.
