Freedom Proclaimed in Seoul | TIP Press

Seoul, South Korea (March 15, 2011) – With a name meaning “all nations” in Korean, it’s only fitting that Seoul’s Onnuri Church joined over 2,000 faith communities in nearly 50 countries to pray for the emancipation of others. The service, held last Sunday, was a part of Freedom Sunday – an international worship event aimed to raise awareness and spur collective action against human trafficking.

TIP Press | Sunday, Freedom Sunday

When Harriet Tubman waged her historic fight against slavery in America, she relied on churches along the Underground Railroad to provide safe haven for escapees. Now, faith-based communities are once again acting to end slavery – creating a network of abolitionist churches across the globe.

On March 13th, the first day of the Christian Lenten season, thousands of churches spanning five continents will unite in their dedication to fight the modern trade in human beings. Through worship, fasting and prayer, Freedom Sunday will rally people of faith to join an international movement confronting human trafficking.

David Batstone Visits Kru Nam in Thailand

In Thailand, stateless ethnic minorities and foreigners are not eligible to receive government provided education, health services, or employment. These marginalized populations face a variety of other serious problems like becoming involved in the trafficking of drugs, illicit goods and people. They lack the ability to protect their young children who often die from preventable diseases and have no access to family planning methods or information regarding how to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and STIs. Parents often sell their children for sexual exploitation out of desperation to survive. Not For Sale in Thailand seeks to address the needs of stateless people, prevent modern-day slavery and protect trafficking survivors.

Not For Sale supports Kru Nam, a thriving artist and modern-day abolitionist who has rescued and prevented over 110 children from slavery in the sex industry. She and her organization, VCDF, runs a Children’s Home providing education, health services, shelter, food and vocational skills to stateless children.
