Making Great Strides at NFS South Africa
Three years ago, when Not For Sale first began working in South Africa, traffickers – if convicted, were charged with kidnapping and other less serious crimes. Recently, Justice Portfolio Committee Chairperson Luwellyn Landers announced that as soon as next month, the Parliament will pass the Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Bill –criminalizing human trafficking, prostitution, and forced labor.
From South Africa: Young Survivor Returns Home to China
Following months of intensive support and care, Kim recently felt ready to return to China.
Speaking about her departure, NFS South African Coordinator Christina Bacino said: “This week I was able to bring one of our girls to the airport and see her off. As we came to the security line and I could go no further, I had mixed emotions. I was so happy to see her freedom and independence restored, but also sad to have to let go and say goodbye. As she disappeared beyond security and I turned to walk away, I thought about how lucky I am to be in the business of setting people free. When this job is rewarding, it is extremely rewarding.”
Now Available | Videos from the Global Forum
In 2011, the modern Abolitionist movement advanced in historical ways, and the Global Forum on Human Trafficking
was our highlight of the year. We are eager to share all of the content for those that were unable to attend, and for those who want to
share it with family, friends, and colleagues. New videos will be posted to the site at the beginning of
each month.
Thank You for an Amazing 2011!
Beyond a doubt, 2011 has been the greatest year in Not For Sale’s history. With your partnership and support we have hit our objectives, exceeded our goals, and (most importantly) made remarkable strides in the movement to end modern-day slavery.
But we’re just getting started.
From South Africa: Rockers visit Not For Sale in Cape Town
Indie rockers Black Rebel Motorcycle Club paid an impromptu visit to Not For Sale South Africa this week.
Two of the group’s talented musicians, Peter Hayes and Leah Shapiro, stopped by the operation in Cape Town to meet with coordinator Christina Bacino and learn about the work the organization are doing there.
The group, who are long time supporters of Not For Sale, took time out of their busy schedule to visit the project. They are currently preparing to play one of South Africa’s biggest music festivals.
Coming Soon: NFS South Africa to establish Crisis Center
Not For Sale South Africa is expanding its efforts and scope through the establishment of a new crisis centre for survivors of human trafficking in Cape Town. The team, led by NFS Coordinator Christina Bacino, is currently searching for a new building that will provide immediate services and care for newly rescued survivors in the city.
Recognizing an essential local need, the new crisis centre will provide specialized shelter and support for survivors before they are interviewed by law enforcement about their experiences.

A key part of Not For Sale’s mission is to empower consumers with information so they can join the fight to end slavery. Transparency in supply chains is essential to ensuring slave labor is not used to make the products that end up in every consumer’s home. The episode, which also featured an interview with Co-Founder and President of Not For Sale Dave Batstone, focused on one of the dirtiest and degrading forms of modern-day slavery in Brazil – charcoal burning.
From Slavery Map: Data is a Powerful Tool
Not For Sale believes that reliable, accurate, effective data in the most powerful tool that the modern abolitionist movement has to bring human trafficking out of the shadows. As a result, it hopes to significantly develop this tool by raising more funds for it in 2012.
In order to provide the most accurate information, Not For Sale controls access to Slavery Map by only allowing individuals who have been trained to use it at the Investigator Academy to supply data and since June 2008 there have been 1,546 cases of human trafficking and modern-day slavery posted.
From South Africa – Smart Activism: Christina Bacino Shares Her Story
I started working for Not For Sale after I did the investigator and supply chains courses at the Academy in San Francisco. I was in South Africa before I went to the Academy doing some prevention work in schools, churches, and NGOs, but the 2010 FIFA World Cup was coming up, and I wanted to do more.
