Google.org Supports Not For Sale

San Francisco, CA, December 14, 2011 – Not For Sale announced today that it has received a $250,000 grant from Google.org to support the organization’s anti-slavery work.

Google.org’s funding will directly benefit the not-for-profit organization’s work in Romania, providing aftercare to survivors of human trafficking and empowering those survivors through employment.

Not For Sale owns a small agricultural enterprise and runs a skilled job-training program for survivors of modern slavery at its project in Timisoara, Romania.

The grant will enable Not For Sale Romania to scale its existing enterprise to grow organic produce for commercial distribution throughout Europe, thereby creating sustainable revenue flow back to the project.

The grant will also support the creation of an innovative prevention program for communities vulnerable to human trafficking, addressing the root causes of modern-day slavery throughout the region.

Commenting on Google.org’s grant to support the organization’s efforts to end slavery and create new futures for survivors in Romania, Not For Sale President and Co-founder David Batstone said: “We are delighted to welcome the support of Google.org. There is no better ally to support innovation and experimentation in the anti-slavery movement than Google.org. Not For Sale is immeasurably grateful to Google.org who — together with the ongoing support of Not For Sale’s individual donors — will create new futures for survivors and transformative solutions to human trafficking in Europe.

“This is an enormously important vote of confidence by a global industry leader,” he added.

Not For Sale works with a wide cross section of innovators and leaders to create new futures for survivors of slavery and people at risk of exploitation on four continents.

Romania’s unique geographical position as a gateway between Europe and Asia makes it a source, transit, and destination country for human trafficking.

In Romania, Not For Sale supports a team of local abolitionists to repatriate survivors, who have been trafficked all around the world – from Romania to France, from Bangladesh to Romania, and from town to town within Romania.
Not For Sale is one of several dozen organizations to receive a grant, which is part of more than $100M in total charitable giving from Google.org in 2011.
