From Thailand: Survivors Preparing To Celebrate Freedom this Holiday Season
Survivors of modern-day slavery living at several of Not For Sale’s international projects are preparing to celebrate their freedom this holiday season.
Festive gatherings will take place at many of Not For Sale’s bases across the world later this month, including Thailand.
Speaking of the upcoming celebrations, J K Klaiber, Not For Sale Thailand Coordinator, said: “We believe it is extremely important to hold these parties as it isn’t often that the children, especially those still living on the streets, have an opportunity or reason to celebrate anything. The children enjoy dressing up and putting on performances or singing songs on the stage, which has proven to improve their self-esteem.”
Kru Nam at Not For Sale Thailand has organized two annual Christmas and New Year’s parties.
A celebration will be held in honor of the 131 children rescued from exploitation living at Not For Sale Thailand’s Children’s Home in Chiang Saen. During this traditional party, the children will have the chance to enjoy a nice hot meal, sing karaoke, dance, play games, and receive a small gift. Members of the local community have also been invited to attend this celebration. In cooperation with the local village government, community members will learn about the dangers of drug and alcohol addiction at the party, as well as the importance of education, and how to protect themselves against human-traffickers.
A second party will be held in the streets of the border city of Mae Sai. Stateless children and adults from both sides of the Thai-Myanmar border will attend and participate in games, singing, and have the chance to perform skits and dances in front of their families and friends. Everyone will be entered in a gift raffle, and enjoy a hot meal, but guests will be warned about human-traffickers at the event. This annual celebration is hugely popular every year and as many as 600 people have attended in the past.
