From Slavery Map: Data is a Powerful Tool

Not For Sale has revealed that the proceeds raised through the recent Hollywood launch of the new capsule collection with AllSaints Spitalfields will go towards upgrading Slavery Map.

Slavery Map is a powerful advocacy tool, which exists to record or research data and incidents of human trafficking across the globe.

Not For Sale believes that reliable, accurate, effective data is the most powerful tool that the modern abolitionist movement has to bring human trafficking out of the shadows. As a result, it hopes to significantly develop this tool by raising more funds for it in 2012.

In order to provide the most accurate information, Not For Sale controls access to Slavery Map by only allowing individuals who have been trained to use it at the Investigator Academy to supply data, and since June 2008 there have been 1,546 cases of human trafficking and modern-day slavery posted.

The majority of cases that have been posted are that of sex trafficking, not because sex trafficking is the most prevalent form of modern slavery but because it is the most publicized and prosecuted.

Speaking about the importance of upgrading Slavery Map, Jono Hirt, Coordinator of the Not For Sale Academy said: “We ultimately see Slavery Map as a means through which we can tell stories of freedom. Imagine if even 50% of all cases of intervention in which a person was emancipated out of slavery, where a charge was laid or prosecution ruled, was posted on Slavery Map. Not only would the data work to articulate the reality of the issue, in an infallible and undeniable way, the platform could be used to guide and formulate policy.  If every time a new case emerged it was posted, it would be a horrifying and yet game changing visualization of the true prevalence of modern-day slavery.

“Beyond that, moving into the future, we envisage Slavery Map expanding to tell the wider and ever evolving Not For Sale story, incorporating data from our International Projects, Free2work and social enterprises,” he added.

If you encounter a current situation of bondage, please immediately call the US national trafficking hotline number so that the proper law enforcement and service providers can be alerted: 1-888-3737-888.
