New Arrivals: Artisan Peruvian Bracelets Help Protect Indigenous Communities
The Not For Sale Store unveiled its beautiful new collection of artisan bracelets today in collaboration with seven indigenous communities deep in the Peruvian Amazon. A group of women from these communities handcrafted the limited-edition bracelets using wild seeds from the rainforest floor. The naturally dyed collection includes four styles of necklaces, two styles of earrings, and one style of bracelets in colors such as magenta, pink, green, black, and red.
Through extensive research, Not For Sale determined that these communities in the Peruvian Amazon are particularly vulnerable to human trafficking. Illegal mining, logging, and poor job opportunities are the main causes of trafficking in the area.
To help the talented Peruvian women grow their business and support their families, Not For Sale paid a premium price for their jewelry. Additionally, a Not For Sale coordinator in Peru has established a new training program to improve the women’s artisan skills. Not For Sale is now working to connect the women with a major retailer that could bring their unique designs to stores around the globe.
“Our goal is to plug these communities into international supply chains and provide sustainable employment opportunities in the region,” said Sam Baker, Not For Sale’s Director of Business Development. Mr. Baker first spotted the bracelets four months ago during a trip to the remote Madre de Dios region and approached the women about supplying the Not For Sale Store.
Speaking about the new collection, he said, “The most interesting thing about this jewelry is the story behind it. It is made in a very remote region of the Amazon Rainforest from organic, sustainable local resources. The women are extremely skilled, and I think their jewelry will be a huge hit with the Not For Sale Store customers.”
Mr. Baker brought a small trial collection back to the store, which proved to be an instant hit with customers earlier this year. Due to popular demand the jewelry is now back in stock for a limited time only.
Proceeds from the jewelry go to support Not For Sale’s Global Initiatives
