Major League Baseball and Chevrolet, the official vehicle of Major League Baseball, today announced that Jeremy Affeldt was named the San Francisco Giants 2010 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet. Affeldt is one of the 30 Club nominees who are finalists for the national award, which is given annually to the Major League Baseball player who combines a dedication to giving back to the community with outstanding skills on the baseball field. Tomorrow will mark the ninth annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente’s legacy and to officially recognize local Club nominees of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet.

The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet recognizes players who best represent the game of baseball through sportsmanship, community involvement and positive contributions to their Clubs. The award is named for the 12-time All-Star and Hall of Famer who died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. The award pays tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character by recognizing talented current players who truly understand the value of helping others.

Affeldt dedicates his time off the field to working with youth and young adults to provide them with the tools and opportunities to realize their dreams and goals regardless of the obstacles. He is actively involved with issues from human trafficking and homelessness, through his involvement with the Not for Sale/Free 2 Play Foundation, to encouraging and rewarding youth volunteerism through the Jefferson Awards Students in Action program and his own foundation as well as work with Generation Alive. Affeldt also supports numerous club initiatives throughout the San Francisco community.

Roberto Clemente was a man who did not seek out selfish gain through his success but used it to bring joy and fulfillment to those who needed it most. To be nominated for an award which recognizes those who exemplify his humanitarian principles is a tremendous honor and provides me with great encouragement,” said Affeldt.

Jeremy is truly a community oriented person who never takes his status as a professional athlete for granted. He is greatly respected by his teammates and the Giants front office as he leads by example. He realizes that we all have the power to make a positive impact in the world, and he does just that by immersing himself in the work of the organizations he supports,” said Staci Slaughter, Giants senior vice president of communications.
