California Supply Chain- Talking Points

Sample Call in script:

  • Hello my name is (your name).
  • I currently reside in (your city).
  • I’d like to speak with someone about Senate Bill 657 which will be up for vote again in the Senate. [You will either be directed to a staff person, or will continue with the person answering the phone.]
  • I am calling to voice my support and ask for Senator (name)’s AYE vote for Senate Bill 657 (the California Transparency in Supply Chains Act of 2010).  The problem of slave and forced labor, and human trafficking is especially prevalent in California.  But, if we can reduce the demand for products made with slave and forced labor we can reduce the crime of slavery and human trafficking.  This bill is a way to reduce the demand.
  • We are counting on the “AYE” vote of Senator (name).  Do you know where the Senator stands on this bill? [if possible, email answer to supplychain (at) castla dot org]
  • Thank you for your time.

(If the staff person wants more information/specifics on the bills or on our arguments in support – please direct them to Shannon Smith-Crowley at 916.457.5217 or supplychain (at) castla dot org“>supplychain (at) castla dot org.)

SUGGESTED SUBJECT LINE: AYE VOTE REQUESTED ON SB 657– STOP SLAVERY NOW

Dear (CA Senator’s name):

I am writing you today to demonstrate my support for SB 657 and ask for your help.  These bills will be on back in the Senate for concurrence soon, and I am hoping that you will show your solidarity with me in voting AYE, and helping California’s stream of commerce become free of forced and slave labor, and human trafficking. The problem of forced and slave labor, and human trafficking in the state of California is well documented.   We are the fourth largest destination for human trafficking in the United States.

SB 657 is aimed at curtailing the problem of forced and slave labor, and human trafficking by reducing the demand for goods and services produced by the hands of individuals who are incapable of freeing themselves.

This bill will go a long way in holding corporations accountable for their actions by asking them to conduct their business in a transparent fashion- documenting production and services utilized in the supply chain- to insure that they are not abusing the rights of men, women and children who are subjected to cruel and inhumane working conditions. It is imperative that California take a firm stand against the sale of goods and services produced by the hands of forced and slave labor, and that your vote on SB 657 be AYE.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly or the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking at supplychain (at) castla dot org“>supplychain (at) castla dot org or go to the website, www.castla.org.
