NFSC goes Reverse-Trick-or-Treating

October 30, 2009 Posted by Allison Trowbridge

This Halloween tens of thousands of schoolchildren nationwide will protest slavery in the cocoa industry

pcrf061jc.tifSan Francisco, CA -  Tomorrow night on Halloween, members of the Not For Sale Campaign will join children across 47 US States and Canada in urging nearly a quarter million households to reduce the likelihood of slave labor in supply chains, specifically the cocoa industry.

Up to twenty thousand groups of children will hand chocolate back to adults during their regular neighborhood trick-or-treating rounds.  The children will distribute Fair Trade certified chocolate attached to a card explaining the labor and environmental problems in the cocoa industry globally and how Fair Trade provides a solution.

The event, Reverse Trick-or-Treating, was launched three years ago to raise awareness of the pervasive problem of child labor, forced labor and trafficking in the cocoa fields, to empower consumers to press the chocolate industry for more fair cocoa sourcing policies, to shift the industry toward sourcing Fair Trade certified cocoa, and to inform consumers about Fair Trade companies that are leading the way to industry reform.  Fair Trade standards prohibit the use of abusive child labor, contain extensive environmental sustainability protections, and enable farmers to escape poverty.

The Reverse-Trick-or-Treating program has joined nonprofit organizations, such as Global Exchange and the Not For Sale Campaign, with Fair Trade Certified™ chocolate companies such as Equal Exchange, Alter Eco, Sweet Earth, and Coco-Zen and local schools, faith groups and youth organizations to raise public awareness about Fair Trade Certified™ chocolate.

ABOUT THE COCOA INDUSTRY

This year’s event comes on the heels of three important developments in the cocoa industry.

Just weeks ago, the Payson Center for International Development at Tulane University released a much-anticipated study as part of a contract with the US Department of Labor to oversee public and private efforts to eliminate the worst forms of child labor in the cocoa sector in Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana.  The report confirmed that hundreds of thousands of children across these two West African nations continue to work on cocoa farms.  The report also questions industry’s claims that it has followed through on promises to consumers, human rights advocates, and Congress to certify that cocoa is free of the worst forms of child labor.

Second, Interpol announced in August that it identified and rescued fifty-four children from slavery in cocoa fields in Cote d’Ivoire.  The children were as young as 11 years old, endured hazardous working conditions, labored 12 hours a day, and were not paid for their work.  This demonstrates that the chocolate industry has still not gone far enough to end child slavery and trafficking in the cocoa fields, even though the top chocolate companies committed to end these practices as part of the Harkin-Engel Protocol signed in 2001. Over sixty national nonprofit organizations and chocolate companies have united to call on the cocoa industry to embrace stronger cocoa sourcing standards in a statement entitled the “Commitment to Ethical Cocoa Sourcing” which can be viewed at www.reversetrickortreating.org.

Third, in 2009, Cadbury became the first major chocolate brand to achieve Fair Trade certification for its Dairy Milk chocolate bars in the United Kingdom, with planned certification in additional countries.  Human rights, Fair Trade, and anti-trafficking activists have applauded Cadbury’s leadership, while urging the company to extend Fair Trade certification to its products distributed in the United States.  A group of advocates have also been actively pressing Hershey’s to become the first mainstream US-based company achieve Fair Trade certification.

ABOUT REVERSE TRICK-OR-TREATING

The Reverse Trick-or-Treating campaign is an initiative of the human rights advocacy group and longtime Not For Sale Campaign partner, Global Exchange, which has a long track record of successfully encouraging major corporations to adopt new business practices.

Nearly a quarter million Fair Trade Chocolates and informational cards have been provided in the United States by Equal Exchange, Alter Eco, Sweet Earth, and Coco-Zen and in Canada by La Siembra, under the leadership of Equal Exchange.  Equal Exchange is a full service provider of high quality, organic coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate and healthy snacks.  100% of Equal Exchange products are fairly traded, benefiting over 30 small farmer cooperatives in 16 countries around the world.

“Kids have a well-developed sense of fairness.  I regularly hear stories of US schoolchildren who are really outraged to learn that mainstream chocolate companies are making them complicit in the enslavement of their peers,” said Adrienne Fitch-Frankel, Director of Global Exchange’s Fair Trade Campaign. “Kids are eager to show solidarity and make it possible for their peers to do go to school and go out and play.  That is why so many kids are thrilled to participate in Reverse Trick-or-Treating and make a difference.  Now, it’s up to the chocolate companies to listen to their important message.”

The national organizations with a lead role in Reverse Trick-or-Treating are Africa Action, Fair Trade Federation, Global Exchange, Green America, International Labor Rights Forum, the Not for Sale Campaign, Oasis/Stop the Traffik, Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, and the United Methodist Church.

196The Global Forum on Human Trafficking Shatters Expectations & Advances the Movement

The first annual Global Forum on Human Trafficking (GFHT) occurred on October 8-9, 2009 in Carlsbad, California. Seeing the need for a major event that would catalyze and engage a greater abolitionist movement, the Not For Sale Campaign created the GFHT to connect intellectual, political, social, religious, and business leaders.  Largely seen as a resounding success by presenters, speakers, organizations, and the host the GFHT allowed for an open and fluid dialogue structure allowing participants to interact with one another and strategies to address human trafficking.

Thank you to everyone who came, engaged, and contributed to make the first Global Forum on Human Trafficking, Oct. 8 & 9 in Carlsbad, CA a resounding success! The gathering exceeded all expectations, as speakers and attendees from across the globe gathered to advance the movement to end modern-day slavery.

The Forum was truly global, bringing together leaders from Uganda, Australia, Thailand, South Africa, Canada, Ghana, Peru, Cambodia… all committed to the fight against human trafficking, both at home and abroad. Thirty leading experts convened in nine panel discussions, all seeking solutions-based approaches to address the issue in their specific fields.

Keynotes were presented by Lou de Baca, Ambassador-at-Large to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, Bama Athreya, Executive Director, International Labor Rights Forum, and David Arkless, President of Global

Urge House to Provide Services for Human Trafficking Survivors!

October 4, 2009 Posted by Kilian Moote

trafficking-victimToday, we are at a crucial moment in the fight against human trafficking: the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies is about to decide whether or not to provide $15 million for services for survivors of human trafficking. Please, write to Committee Chairman Mollohan and Ranking Member Wolf to urge them to fund services for victims of human trafficking today!  The upwards of 17,500 people who are trafficked into the United States, plus the tens of thousands of Americans trafficked internally each year, are in desperate need of services like medical care, counseling, legal assistance, shelter, education, and employment in order to recover from horrific abuses and rebuild their lives. Without adequate funds those services in the U.S. will be underfunded and inaccessible for many survivors.  For many trafficking survivors, these services are the key to a new life after the horrible ordeal of slavery.

The Senate Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies Subcommittee has already agreed to fund trafficking victims’ services at $15 million. Now, we are asking the House to support the highest possible funding level to provide trafficking survivors the resources they desperately need.  Specifically, we are asking the House conferees to commit to the following:

•    To provide the highest possible funding level for Department of Justice grants for programs to end human trafficking and slavery;
•     To provide a floor for foreign nationals in the Justice grants to ensure continuity of programs;
•    Retain the Senate report language requiring the Department of Justice to establish a point of contact in each U.S. Attorney Office to better coordinate human trafficking and slavery efforts in each jurisdiction; and
•    Support the Senate report language for Justice’s specialized Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit.

The tour has been such a tremendous success that we’re adding more amazing artists to take the movement to even more cities this fall.

This month’s featured artist is Courtney Reid:

172WERS Boston calls Courtney’s soothing vocals “nothing short of heavenly.”

This singer/songwriter’s sultry voice, groovy rhythms and a sound rich with harmony are reminiscent of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Love Struck is Courtney Reid’s debut solo album, produced by Don Chaffer of Waterdeep, released Summer 2009.  Since 2001 Courtney Reid has performed with Rachel Taylor and Rollyn Zoubek in the group Maeve, touring all over the East Coast and opening for
many bands and artists, including Nicole Nordeman and Jars of Clay. Maeve has released four recordings, the most recent, “And the World Became Kind” with Grammy Award-winning producer Charlie Peacock.
