Although the Netherlands is ranked Tier 1 (the government fully meets the minimum standard for the elimination of trafficking) by the US Trafficking in Persons Report, a study found that the number of human trafficking victims in the Netherlands is significantly underreported. In 2017, it was estimated that the number is five times higher than reported figures – around 6,250 trafficking victims per year. Contributing factors include reorganization in the police service – leaving vacancies in the human trafficking unit, and political focus shifting to terrorism, leaving trafficking crimes lower priority.
Approximately 58% of trafficking victims are forced to work in the sex industry and around half of female sex trafficking victims are underage girls. 46% of sex trafficking victims are Dutch citizens, with other victims are trafficked predominantly from Romania, Bulgaria and Poland in the EU and Nigeria, Uganda and Vietnam internationally.
Our Mission and Purpose
To help trafficked women gain valuable job and life skills that will help give them the freedom to find their own work and economic opportunities.
Based in Amsterdam, in order to be close to sex trafficking victims in the Red Light District, Not for Sale created a culinary internship for women. What started as a small project teaching trainees to prepare nutritious soups to sell to women working in the surrounding Red Light District, turned into our restaurant, Dignita, now operating in four locations across the city. Dignita hires or places trainees into a job in the restaurant industry, paid a full working wage. Any profits from Dignita are returned to Not For Sale to continue to fight trafficking worldwide.
Dignita’s work is vital to interrupting the cycle of poverty and abuse – after receiving a permanent contract at the restaurant, one trainee was able to legally bring her children to the Netherlands from her home country; her son is in school and her daughter found a job with help from Not for Sale.
