From Burma to Thailand
Chimee is a four year old girl from Burma who had to beg in the streets to support her mother’s drug problem. Her mother’s addiction had already torn her family apart. Seven of Chimee’s siblings had already been sold – some of who are in the sex trade.
One day, Chimee didn’t earn enough money from begging so her mom got very upset and poured buring hot water on her arms. The big scars on Chimee’s arms makes us imagine the nightmare that she had to face that night.
Our team in northern Thailand heard about this, and rushed to the area of Mai Sai, near the Burma Border to find Chimee and give her proper care and find a better environment for her to live. Our team had to face the mother. After negotiating for a while, the mother would only let Chimee go to a safe place for 800 baht (roughly around 22 US Dollars).
The area where Chimee lived is an area filled with drug gangs. One kid who knew our team drove up on a motor bike and alerted them that they had to leave because they were seen as a threat to one of the gangs, so our team left before they could make a deal for Chimee’s sister.
Chimee is now safe at the children’s village. Her smile would knock your socks off. She has been at the school for 6 months, and is doing great.
Building a Village: Chiang Mai, Thailand
I went to visit an abolitionist in Northern Thailand by the name of Kru Nam, I met her when I was writing my book, Not For Sale. She had learned of kids in her city of Chang Mai, who had been put into the karaoke clubs and the brothels of Thailand, in order to serve the pleasures of men, who came from all over the world to take advantage of these young kids sexually. Kru Nam was incensed when she learned how they were being exploited. She began running into the clubs, and rescuing them.
When I met her almost a year ago, she had over 37 kids. Today she has 120 kids that she has rescued. It was our goal to build her a village. One dorm is completely done, and four more are in construction. There is a large kitchen for the entire village, a place where they can go to school, and an art center for the kids. It was really a thrill to see the kids so involved, planting shrubbery around the new dorms and working to provide food for the village. They grew 250 kilograms of rice in the recent harvest, and all of that was gone in one week-120 is a lot of mouths to feed.
We have finished classrooms and put in a computer lab. Students from Emory Medical School are building a public health program, and are currently working on the construction of a medical facility. It’s an exciting time in the lives of these kids who finally have a home.

How You Can Help
In partnership with Giving Children Hope, we have fundraised $400,000 worth of medical supplies and equipment ready to be shipped to Thailand. These supplies will equip the medical facility we are currently building, but we still need $40,000 to get these materials to Thailand and to pay for a nurse for the whole year. Please donate today, and you will help us improve the lives of these children.
