FREE TO BE

...Not for Sale is a campaign of students, entrepreneurs, artists, people of faith, athletes, law enforcement officers, politicians, social workers, skilled professionals, and all justice seekers, united to fight the global slave trade.

Every single person has a skill that they can give to free an individual living in bondage.

COMMUNITIES OF FAITH STANDING AGAINST SLAVERY

Free to Be aims to galvanize people of faith to join a new generation of abolitionists who stand in solidarity with those whose voice has been silenced by the chains of bondage. Historically, the roots of abolition have sprouted from within religious communities. Driven by deep religious conviction, William Wilberforce fought to make slavery illegal 200 years ago in Britain. With this fresh in mind, it is time to stand again.

In recognition of the important role that individuals of faith, churches, synagogues, ashrams, and temples can play in fighting modern day slavery, we encourage people of all religious backgrounds to take action to become modern-day abolitionists.

We will be launching our Abolitionist Church Network, please check back soon!!

ADVOCATES

In the spirit of the movement, individuals and organizations are lifting up their diverse talents, resources, and ideas to become modern-day abolitionists. We will highlight Advocates who have supplied the Not for Sale Campaign with their unique gifts.

MEET SOME OF OUR ADVOCATES:

LONGTERMCHANGE

WHO: LongTermChange is best described as a conversation group for leadership in the Progressive Christian movement.  All participants administer their own groups, and each group collectively tests new strategies for communication, fundraising, and ministry, with the goal of collaboratively developing their skills.

WHAT: The Not for Sale Campaign connected with LongTermChange’s extensive leadership network, which helped brainstorm and test some internet strategies for mastering Web 2.0.

If you’re in church or organizational leadership and would like to brainstorm with other leaders, please write Jo Guldi a short hello:

TIKKUN

WHO: Tikkun is an international community of people of many faiths calling for social justice and political freedom in the context of new structures of work, caring communities, and democratic social and economic arrangements, which is guided in their work by their belief in the principle of solidarity. For Tikkun, this principle has spiritual roots in the Jewish commandment to remember that we were all slaves in Egypt; we believe that we are all harmed by oppression directed at any group or individual.

WHAT: A guiding tenet of Tikkun is that it should strive to influence public discourse in order to inspire compassion, generosity, non-violence and recognition of the spiritual and dimensions of life. Tikkun fuses this ethos different when the Not for Sale Campaign asked to be connected into the community.

Tikkun graciously allowed the Campaign to send a “stand alone” message to its web community regarding the launch of the Campaign. Find out more about Tikkun at www.tikkun.org

BOB SMITH

WHO: Bob oversees 68 churches as the Capital District Superintendent of the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. Upon learning about the Not for Sale Campaign, Bob immediately saw two things: the glaring need to wake people to the truths surrounding modern-day slavery and the potential the Campaign has to unite all communities of faith to eradicate slavery today.

WHAT: Bob is currently working with the Not for Sale Campaign as an internal advocate within the United Methodist Church. Ignited by the issue of modern day slavery, his behind-the-scenes work has opened doors to places that the Campaign could otherwise never hope to access on its own.
