As it has been throughout the history of our world and all our world’s religions, slavery was a fact of life in the first days of Islam, as an alternative to death and starvation resulting as a consequence of war. But despite that, Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the revelation he brought declared unequivocally that all peoples, regardless of status, race, creed or religion are equals before our Creator, and enjoined kindness to slaves, requiring that they be fed, clothed and housed equally to their masters, and made freeing slaves a meritorious act.
The International Muslim Abolitionist Movement (IMAM) is created in the belief that Muslims have a special role to play when it comes to the work of abolition, because of the example of Muhammad (peace be upon him), who’s family, friends and companions personally freed almost 40 thousand slaves in his own lifetime, and who dedicated himself to creating a world where all peoples, regardless of race, creed, status or religion can thrive. To honor his legacy, we will assist you to grow a thriving abolitionist program in your backyard by providing platforms for active engagement.
