“What’s Best For The Family”, by Ross Shingledecker

The yellow sunrise light soaring over the bleached bones of the Coliseum and the arched churches of Rome (many of the latter built with marble stripped from the former) illuminated recently-washed piazzas and opening trattorias across the city, dancing on the surface of the Tiber and not yet obscured by the smog of early morning traffic. The light reached even the cramped bedroom that Mirela shared with her younger brother Nicu, and for one brief moment the peeling ochre wallpaper shone like cathedral gold.  But the glow faded as Mirela’s eyes adjusted to the light. Nicu, exhausted from last night’s expedition, groaned and rolled over on his pallet, pulling a worn blanket over his head.  Mirela smiled at him as she swung out of bed, but her smile vanished when she stepped onto the stone floor–it must have been a damp night, because her knee buckled under her weight when she tried to stand.  Biting her tongue so as not to wake Nicu, Mirela grabbed the edge of the dresser they shared and pulled herself to her feet.

It was going to be one of those days.

Butterflies Shouldn’t Kill

-by andar90

I used to play in my own imagination,

But now I imagine being able to play.
I miss by bear, my old stuffed companion,
Now all I have is the blade they’ve given me.
They call it a knife but I call it butterfly,
I pretend it has pretty blue and white wings

NomiS is a socially conscious artist from southern California. Coming from a musically inclined background, NomiS found himself interested in many different genres of music early on. He found a connection to Hip Hop culture and music during grade school where the alias “NomiS” became his musical identity.  Shortly after High School NomiS hooked up with a long time friend and local DJ named, “Topher 85″. This is when things started coming together. The two continued to pay dues locally doing shows while attempting to perfect their crafts. Meanwhile, NomiS was studying music at a California State University and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Visual & Performing Arts with an emphasis in Music .

Performing everywhere from festivals, arenas, Schools, bars, churches, coffee shops, street corners and living rooms. After a makeshift release in 2004, an Ep in 2006, and a side project  in 2007 (Forgotten Heroes); NomiS released an extremely competent debut full-length installment in 2008 entitled, “Mouthpiece of the Lion”. This album featured collaborations with Vanderslice (Sean Price, Army of the Pharaohs), members of Deepspace 5, Scribbling Idiots and more. Shortly afterward, NomiS took a break from the solo act to take a leadership role in the crew known as “Gallery Drive”. Together they released “Scratching the Surface” which many claim will be the most “slept on” album of the year. Now in summer  2010 NomiS finally releases his follow up solo EP entitled, “Rosario Dawson” which features Blame One, iAMe (Sandpeople), Manchild (Mars ILL/Deepspace 5) and more.

NomiS has performed internationally in countries such as Trinidad, The Philippines, and Thailand. NomiS has shared the stage with the likes of freestyle legend SuperNATURAL, stand up comedian Wanda Sykes, Evidence (Dilated Peoples), Abstract Rude, The Visionaries, Qwel, Braille, David Crowder Band, 4th Avenue Jones, KJ 52, LA Symphony, As I Lay Dying, Toby Mac and countless others.
NomiS continues to attempt to bring truth to everyone. Understanding the responsibility of an eMCee, NomiS seeks to provoke thought in the minds of his listeners with a hope that it will eventually lead to life change.

Nomis has performed with Not For Sale many times, including during the 2008 Backyard Abolitionist Tour! Check him out on Facebook or Myspace.

Students Using Art as Action!

Julia Spangler, a senior at the University of Indianapolis created an online application that takes viewers on an interactive journey of the global slave trade for her final design project. Based on the Not For Sale Book, Julia traced the path of a trafficking victim from her home, across borders, and into servitude. She used her skills and education to create a tool to fight modern-day slavery.
